Boca del Río, Veracruz, July 22, 2019.– This weekend, during the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Port of Veracruz, as part of the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry (IMCC), Coca-Cola FEMSA, Sprite and more than 300 young people and families from Veracruz, took part in the cleaning and recovery of Santa Ana beach in Boca del Río, proving that it is possible to make a positive change for the planet, through the collection of waste for future recycling.
This action adds up to the 4 cleanings of water bodies that Coca-Cola FEMSA will be carrying out in the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, State of Mexico and Mexico City, which are part of the “Summer Sprite” initiative organized by The IMCC with the purpose of recovering spaces throughout the country and leaving them free of any man-made garbage such as bottles, plastics, tires, bags, cigarette butts, etc.
Summer Sprite takes place simultaneously to the launch of the new “Blue Sprite” bottle, which is made 100% by recovered bottles, becoming the first soda brand to have a container with these characteristics to join Ciel Azul, launched during 2018. At the end of the summer, the brand will return to its iconic green color, but the bottle will still be made up by 100% PET recovered.
During the cleaning of Playa Santa Ana, the collaboration between government, community and industry showed that environmental commitment is a shared responsibility. Thanks to the participation of the volunteers, it was possible to collect more than 150 kilos of waste, of which a large part will be recycled through ECOCE and IMER with the purpose of extending its useful life. On the other hand, non-recyclable waste will be delivered to government institutions for proper treatment.
Verano Sprite is part of the initiatives that Coca-Cola FEMSA has implemented as part of the Mexican Coca-Cola Industry to reach the global goal A World Without Waste, through which it seeks to collect and recycle the equivalent of 100% of its sold containers by 2030. This project also adds to the commitments of a socially responsible company announced by the bottler during the launch of the commemorative can of the 500th Anniversary of the Port.
It should be noted, that since 2011, Coca-Cola FEMSA has invested in the development of its PET packaging, making it lighter and integrating an average of 21% recycled PET resin in line with its 2020 goal of reaching an average of 25%, allowing savings of more than 25 thousand tons of PET resin. In addition, the IMCC is the main PET recycler in Mexico, having the capacity of processing 85,000 tons through its two PetStar and IMER recycling plants.
