FEMSA Collection presents the work of Frida Kahlo in Sonora

Hermosillo, Sonora, April 20th, 2016.– The Government of the State of Sonora presents the exhibition “Frida Kahlo: My dress hangs there. Sonora. FEMSA Collection”, which will open on Thursday, April 21st at 20:00 hours, thanks to the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Sonoran Institute of Culture, the Art Museum of Sonora, OXXO and FEMSA.

The artwork “My Dress Hangs There” (1933) of the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, is accompanied by three photographs with the intention of bringing the audience closer to the production process and historical context of the piece.

To enrich the visit and provide a wider panorama of Frida Kahlo’s life and work, a timeline will be installed as well as a room with additional bibliography. There will also be various activities happening around the sample, such as a conference and the projection of a video.

“Frida Kahlo painted “My Dress Hangs There” (1933) during her stay in the United States, where Diego Rivera was invited to paint murals. It is an atypical work of art, not only for being the only documented collage of the artist, but because, even though it is not a self-portrait in a strict sense, you can perceive the presence of the artist in the piece. We are very proud of collaborating with the Sonoran Institute of Culture and the Art Museum of Sonora to share with the State’s public one of Kahlo’s artworks”, said FEMSA’s Cultural Program Manager, Rosa María Rodríguez Garza.

Through its itinerant exhibitions’ program, FEMSA shares its Collection with the most diverse communities in Mexico and abroad, fulfilling its goal of promoting education in its different facets through the dissemination of culture and art.

“In the Sonoran Institute of Culture we have a great commitment with the community and the artists, that’s why we have sought strategic alliances to generate spaces for the expression and dissemination of art, that attract new audiences but also attend to the captive audience’s demand to access exhibitions of great quality, like this one”, said the Sonoran Institute of Culture’s Director, Mario Welfo Álvarez Beltrán.

“For the Art Museum of Sonora, it is a placer to join forces with organizations with whom we share the same purpose, such as the Sonoran Institute of Culture and FEMSA, to make a project that allows the dissemination of the work of such an iconic artist, such as Frida, and present it for the first time in the state of Sonora. Parallel to the exhibitions, there will be a series of cultural activities that will bring us closer to the production and life of Kahlo”, said Rubén Matiella Villaescusa.

“In OXXO we are committed to generate social value in the communities where we are present, which is why we are pleased to be part of this project that, through various cultural activities, will enrich the cultural life of Hermosillo and encourage art appreciation in its inhabitants”, said Plaza OXXO Hermosillo’s Manager, Patricia Medina Ruiz.

The Art Museum of Sonora (MUSAS) is located on Bulevar Agustín Vildósola s/n, corner with De la Cultura Avenue, at Villa de Seris. Visiting hours are from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 19:00hrs and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 19:00 hrs. The cost of general admission is of $30.00 pesos and $15.00 pesos for students.
